Cross-party MPs urge sanctions on “Israel” and warn that UK silence over the Gaza genocide risks complicity and undermines international law.

A group of British MPs demanded that Prime Minister Keir Starmer expel “Israel’s” ambassador to the UK, Tzipi Hotovely, citing the country’s obligations under the Genocide Convention and “Israel’s” ongoing genocide in Gaza.
In a letter to Starmer, cross-party MPs accused “Israel” of pursuing a genocidal campaign. The initiative, led by Independent MP Adnan Hussain and backed by members of the Independent Alliance, the Green Party, the SNP, and Labour MP Abtisam Mohamed, urged the government to take decisive steps to end what they described as UK complicity in Israeli crimes.

“As a signatory to the Genocide Convention, the UK has a binding duty to prevent genocide wherever it occurs,” the MPs wrote. “Silence or inaction in the face of genocide is not neutrality, it is complicity.”
They called on the government to remove Hotovely as a signal of zero tolerance for violations of international law and urged the UK to impose sanctions on “Israel” while supporting International Criminal Court (ICC) efforts to prosecute those responsible.
Hotovely, “Israel’s” envoy to London since 2020, is a far-right figure who has openly rejected Palestinian statehood and previously dismissed the 1948 Nakba as “an Arab lie.” Human rights advocates have long condemned her stance as part of “Israel’s” wider erasure of Palestinian history and rights.
Wider context
As “Israel’s” former settlements minister, Hotovely was a vocal advocate of settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. Since taking her post in London, she has intervened in domestic politics and maintained close ties with pro-“Israel” lobby groups. Declassified UK reported that she met frequently with Labour Party donors and influential lobbyists during “Israel’s” aggression on Gaza.

Critics say these connections reflect undue interference in British politics at a time when “Israel” faces genocide proceedings at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The MPs’ letter also condemned “Israel’s” stated plan to impose "full military control over Gaza," warning that it would escalate a campaign that has already brought the Strip to near-total devastation.
They stressed that the UK cannot continue to provide political cover or military backing for actions that constitute genocide, warning that promoting a “rules-based international order” while enabling its violation undermines Britain’s credibility.
