British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced the United Kingdom’s readiness to participate in the disarmament process of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, as well as to deploy ceasefire observers in the Gaza Strip, according to a statement from his office.
“The Prime Minister said the UK stands ready to play a leadership role in the process of decommissioning Hamas, then supporting the reconstruction of Gaza and participating in the ceasefire monitoring mission,” the statement read.
The announcement came following talks with French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday, where both sides reportedly discussed the international framework surrounding the ceasefire and post-war recovery in Gaza.
UK backs Trump-led ceasefire framework
The UK’s position aligns with the broader US-brokered peace initiative, spearheaded by President Donald Trump, who unveiled a 20-point plan on September 29 to end the war in the Gaza Strip.
The plan’s first phase was activated on October 9, when Hamas released Israeli captives and "Israel" withdrew its forces to a pre-agreed line inside the Gaza Strip. In return, hundreds of Palestinian prisoners—including individuals sentenced to life imprisonment—were released by the occupation.
Trump’s proposal outlines the complete exclusion of Hamas and other Palestinian factions from Gaza’s future governance, suggesting instead a technocratic administration under international supervision, reportedly led by Trump himself.
Trump declaration signed by regional leaders
On Monday, Trump joined Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in signing the "Trump Declaration for Enduring Peace and Prosperity", which formalizes their commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Gaza conflict.
The declaration aims to secure a long-term truce, oversee reconstruction, and facilitate a political transition in the besieged Strip, which has witnessed massive destruction over the past two years.
