The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that an artillery strike dispersed a Ukrainian group that attempted to carry out an operation in western Russia near the town of Novaya Tavolzhanka.

"On June 4, border defense units of the Western Military District and border guards of the Russian Federal Security Service detected an attempt by a sabotage and reconnaissance group of Ukrainian terrorists to cross a river near the village of Novaya Tavolzhanka, in the Belgorod Region," it said.

The region's governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said in a video on social media that fighting between Russian forces and a Ukrainian sabotage group was still ongoing and he expressed hopes that they will soon all be eliminated.

"They entered as a sabotage and intelligence-gathering group. A battle is underway in Novaya Tavolzhanka. I hope they will all be eliminated," Gladkov said, adding that the group in question had offered a swap for captured Russian troops.

Gladkov responded to the Russian Volunteer Corps. 👀

He also said that it could be possible some of the captured troops were killed but he agreed to meet for talks at a checkpoint in the Russian town of Shebekino, near Ukraine's Khrarkov region.

On Thursday, the Russian Ministry of Defense said that Russian troops warded off three Ukrainian cross-border attacks near Shebekino in Belgorod. According to reports, a dormitory was set on fire and one administrative building was damaged in the attacks.
