The Kursk incursion was a significant cross-border operation launched by Ukrainian forces into Russia's Kursk region in August 2024.
It was one of the boldest actions taken by Ukraine during the ongoing war, marking the first major incursion of Ukrainian regular forces into Russian territory since the conflict began in 2022.
Ukraine captured several settlements and claimed control over approximately 1,000 square kilometers of territory.
Russia quickly mobilized reserves and imposed emergency measures across several regions, including Kursk, Belgorod, and Bryansk, to counter the incursion.
Despite Ukraine's success in capturing territory, experts pointed out that the operation did not achieve one of its main objectives—diverting Russian forces from other battlefronts.
Instead, Russian attacks in the eastern regions, such as Pokrovsk, continued.
