Ukrainian power generation decimated after Trypilska TPP destroyed
Having lost two plants in the years prior, the company has now lost all its generation capacity.
Thursday was labeled a "dark day" in the history of Ukrainian power-generating company Centrenergo, as it reported the complete loss of its generation capacity due to the destruction of the Trypilska thermal power plant (TPP), the largest facility in the Kiev Region.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said earlier in the day that a coordinated strike had targeted the country's energy infrastructure. Centrenergo confirmed that the Trypilska thermal power plant in the Kiev Region was completely obliterated in the attack, followed by a significant fire erupting in the facility's turbine workshop.
"A dark day in the history of Centrenergo. As a result of today's massive attack, our entire generation capacity was wiped out … The Trypilska thermal power plant in the Kiev Region was completely destroyed," Centrenergo was quoted as saying by the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.

This marks a crucial juncture in the war's progression, as the company has now lost all its generation capacity.
Kiev first lost control of the Uglegorsk TPP in Donetsk in July 2022. It lost the Zmiivska TPP, situated in the Kharkov Region, in March 2023.
Earlier today, the Ukrainian online newspaper Strana reported that regional authorities in Kiev have implemented emergency schedules for power and water shutdowns following the destruction of the Trypilska TPP.
In late March, Ukraine's national grid operator Ukrenergo announced that it implemented emergency blackouts in multiple different regions following Russian strikes.
These include the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhye, and Kirovograd. Restrictions have also been implemented in Kharkiv and Kryvyi Rih.
The Russian defense ministry admitted to using long-range air, sea, and land-based precision weapons to target energy facilities, asserting that these facilities were being utilized by Ukraine's armed forces.
