UN in Sudan pledges support for 'democratic change'
UN envoy to Sudan Volker Perthes calls for rebuilding lost trust and reviving democratic change in the country.
The United Nations envoy for Sudan asked Friday the military and political leaders to take measures to rebuild trust both internally and internationally.
"Immediate confidence-building measures and a visible commitment to bringing the country back on a democratic transition path will be key," envoy Volker Perthes said.
Perthes asserted that the Sudanese authorities would need to take tangible steps to regain financial, economic, and political support from the international community.
The envoy stressed the need to swiftly return to financing pivotal sectors, highlighting healthcare and social aid, to guarantee that the Sudanese people do not bear the consequences of the political crisis.
Several countries condition aid to Sudan, which was frozen following the October 25 coup led by Major General Abdul-Fattah Burhan, for Khartoom's return to civilian rule and respect of the rights to peaceful demonstrations.
Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok had reached an agreement with coup leader al-Burhan after the latter placed the former under house arrest.
The agreement stipulated that Hamdok would be reinstated to his earlier position, and all political prisoners imprisoned since the October coup would be released.
