All members of the United Nations Security Council except the United States declared on Wednesday that the famine in Gaza is the result of human actions, describing it as a "manmade crisis."
In a joint statement, the 14 nations stated that "the use of starvation as a weapon of war is banned under international humanitarian law." They appealed for an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire," the release of every captive held by Hamas and other groups, and a large-scale increase in humanitarian assistance throughout the besieged territory.
The council members also pressed "Israel" to "immediately and unconditionally lift all restrictions on aid delivery," noting that access to food and humanitarian supplies must not be obstructed.
Gaza Famine
This warning comes as the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) formally declared famine in parts of Gaza, with more than 514,000 people, a quarter of the population, already affected, and projections suggesting the number could rise to 641,000 by the end of September.
Gaza's Health Ministry reported at least 313 deaths from hunger, including 119 children, and said ten more people, two of them children, died of starvation in just the past 24 hours.
Aid agencies have pointed to over 6,000 aid trucks stalled at Gaza's border due to Israeli restrictions, despite being ready to deliver desperately needed supplies. UN officials warn that if "Israel" proceeds with a full-scale invasion of Gaza City, "all hope is gone" for containing the famine.
Meanwhile, "Israel" has challenged the IPC's findings and demanded that the hunger monitor retract its report, threatening to cut funding if no revision is made.
