UN warns of alarming human costs of Israeli war on Lebanon
The UN humanitarian coordinator for Lebanon has raised the alarm over the escalating human suffering caused by the ongoing Israeli airstrikes.
The UN Deputy Special Coordinator and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Lebanon (UNSCOL) Imran Riza has issued a warning about the “alarming” level of human suffering and severe humanitarian consequences resulting from the ongoing Israeli aggression.
Riza painted a bleak picture of the country’s situation in a statement released on Monday.
“The current picture of life in Lebanon remains grim. Yesterday, airstrikes reportedly killed 23 people, including seven children, in the village of Almat in Mount Lebanon,” Riza said on X.
Additionally, an airstrike in the city of Tyre on the same day led to the heartbreaking massacre of five siblings from a single family, all of whom had special needs, according to Riza's statement.
He further reported that over the past week, Israeli airstrikes have killed at least 241 people and injured 642 others in Lebanon, according to the Ministry of Health.
“In the past month, more than 185,000 people have fled their homes in search of safety within the country, bringing the total to over 870,000 people internally displaced,” Riza stated.
The UN official noted that many individuals, including the elderly and those with health issues, have stayed behind to witness the devastation of their ancestral homes.
He called for immediate action to protect civilians and infrastructure, stressing the need to uphold international humanitarian law and put an end to the ongoing aggression.
