UNRWA says severe malnutrition spreading to southern Gaza

Malnutrition in Gaza is reportedly spreading to the Strip's south as hundreds of thousands are forced to share the abysmal airdrops that are not enough to sustain even half the population.

The Gaza Strip is facing a major food shortage, with the situation so dire that people are resorting to using animal feed as a source of food, according to Adnan Abu Hasna, a media advisor for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

In a press statement, Abu Hasna said that the situation in the Gaza Strip was "miserable" and that "the food shortage is a major catastrophe." He added that the aid that has been airdropped into the Strip was not enough nor was it reaching all of those who need it.

Abu Hasna stressed the need for immediate food and water supplies to be sent to the Gaza Strip, warning that malnutrition is becoming a serious problem, especially in the southern part of the Strip.

"Israel" not only has blocked aid from entering the Strip but blatantly targeted a gathering of starved Palestinians waiting for humanitarian aid packages on Thursday at the Kuwait Roundabout in southern Gaza, Al Mayadeen's correspondent had reported.

The death toll has risen to over 100 martyrs, with 200 others injured. The Gaza Ministry of Health emphasized that the Kuwait roundabout massacre was further proof of the Israeli occupation's intentions to commit more horrendous crimes, and added that the number of martyrs is expected to increase as more casualties, in dire condition, arrived at the different hospitals in Gaza.

The European Union's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, described the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as "manmade", and accused "Israel" of using starvation and hunger as a "war arm".

Cripling hunger

Gazans are experiencing unprecedented hunger. According to the United Nations, 2.2 million Palestinians in Gaza—nearly the entire population—are experiencing "crisis or worse levels of food insecurity." Half a million people suffer "catastrophic" levels of food insecurity.

Not only are Palestinians being bombed by the IOF, but numerous Gazans have been martyred as a result of malnutrition and dehydration.

According to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), a prominent food security study and advocacy organization, the Gaza Strip is in Phase 4 "Emergency" food insecurity, with a significant danger of impending famine.

Due to the Israeli total blockade and genocidal war, Palestinians in Gaza are facing significant challenges in providing essential supplies, leading to difficulties in feeding their children. Mothers, grappling with starvation, are struggling to produce sufficient milk for breastfeeding, prompting parents to plead for infant formula at overwhelmed health facilities. Meanwhile, relief workers reported that civilians in northern Gaza, on average, have lost considerable weight.

Reports indicate that food shortages are most severe in northern Gaza, where "Israel" focused its aggression at the beginning of its genocidal war. The World Health Organization (WHO) has lately stated that child malnutrition in this region is approximately three times higher than in southern Gaza.

Previous screenings at health facilities revealed that at least one in six children under the age of two is acutely malnourished. Richard Peeperkorn, the WHO representative for the territory, warned that these figures are likely even higher today.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also facing significant health threats due to malnutrition, as reported by the Global Nutrition Cluster, an alliance of NGOs, in February.
