US announces $500 mln military aid package to Ukraine
As Trump's inauguration nears, the Biden administration allocates another weapons package to Ukraine.
The United States unveiled a new $500 million military aid package for Ukraine, aiming to strengthen Kiev's capabilities ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.
"The United States is providing another significant package of urgently needed weapons and equipment to our Ukrainian partners as they defend against Russia's ongoing attacks," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.
This follows earlier security assistance packages of $988 million and $725 million announced earlier this month. The current administration is working to expedite aid to Ukraine before Trump takes office.
The new package includes ammunition for HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, artillery rounds, drones, armored vehicles, and protective equipment for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats, among other resources.
It is worth noting that the weaponry and other assets that will be sent to Ukraine will be drawn from US military stockpiles.
Trump's victory in November has raised questions about the future of US assistance to Ukraine, creating a narrow window for the disbursement of funds before his administration takes office. The incoming president has advocated for a completely different approach to relations with Ukraine, advocating for a peace deal between the two countries.
Meanwhile, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby emphasized that President Joe Biden remains committed to providing assistance, saying, "We're going to continue to provide additional packages right up to the end of this administration."
