US global standing plummeting in favor of China, Russia: Survey
The Democracy Perception Index 2024 also reveals that support for the United States among Europeans has waned.
The United States has experienced a decline in approval ratings, particularly in the Middle East and Europe, while China and Russia's global standing has bolstered over the past year, RT reported citing a recent survey.
Referred to as the Democracy Perception Index 2024, the survey was conducted by the German firm Latana on behalf of the Alliance of Democracies with some 63,000 respondents from 53 countries.
In most of the surveyed nations in Asia and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Russia and China are now viewed as favorably as the US, with Washington's approval plummeting notably due to its involvement in the war on Gaza. The results also found that support for the US among Europeans has waned.
Frederick DeVeaux, a senior researcher at Latana, highlighted that this is "the first time since the start of the Biden administration" that many Western European countries have returned to net negative perceptions of the United States.
According to the researcher, this shift in sentiment has been "particularly stark in Germany, Austria, Ireland, Belgium and Switzerland."
The survey highlights a significant decline in America's global reputation since last year, especially in Muslim-majority countries surveyed, such as Algeria, Egypt, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, and Turkey. The researchers said the decline was due to US President Joe Biden's unwavering support for "Israel" during its war on the Gaza Strip.
Meanwhile, the survey revealed that perceptions of Russia and China have been steadily improving in every region except Europe.
In a related context, the survey emphasized that only Europe and the United States are advocating for severing economic ties with Russia over the Ukraine conflict, while the rest of the world favors maintaining economic relations with Moscow.
