A new round of direct talks between Syria and the Israeli occupation may take place in the United States following the anticipated visit of Syrian transitional President Ahmed al-Sharaa to Washington, Axios journalist Barak Ravid reported on Saturday, citing US Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack.
According to Ravid, the upcoming session would mark the fifth round of direct negotiations between Syria and the Israeli regime, with Washington acting as mediator. Barrack indicated that the US administration is seeking to reach a security agreement between the two sides before the end of the year.
In September, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced progress in the ongoing security discussions with Syria, describing them as part of broader regional efforts to stabilize the northern front.
For his part, President al-Sharaa stated earlier that Syria might sign a security agreement with “Israel”, but emphasized that such a deal would not amount to normalization of relations with the occupation entity.
The potential talks reflect renewed US diplomatic engagement in the region amid shifting security alignments and continuing efforts to redefine post-war arrangements involving Damascus, Tel Aviv, and Washington.
Syria, 'Israel' moving toward security deal
Israeli news outlet i24NEWS reported Friday that a source close to Syria’s transitional President, Ahmad al-Sharaa, said a potential trilateral meeting between the Israeli regime, Syria, and the United States could be held as part of efforts to reach what was described as a “security agreement.”
According to the same source, “very significant progress” has been made over the past two weeks toward signing a security accord between Syria and “Israel,” the report added.
At the same time, the outlet cited a Syrian report claiming that an Israeli-Syrian meeting was expected to take place on Friday in the Azerbaijani capital of Baku.
'Agreement with Israel necessity'
Syrian Transitional President revealed that ongoing security talks with "Israel" could yield results in the coming days, marking the most direct acknowledgment yet of progress in US-brokered negotiations.
