The United States will provide Ukraine with intelligence on long-range energy infrastructure targets within Russia as it weighs whether to send Kiev missiles that could be used in such strikes, according to two officials who spoke to Reuters on Wednesday.
The United States is also asking its NATO allies to provide similar support, confirming information that was first reported by The Wall Street Journal, according to US officials.
In an alleged attempt to end the war in Ukraine, and following a recent hardening of his rhetoric toward Russia, President Donald Trump has signed off on a decision that represents the first known policy change since that shift.
According to Reuters, Russia's UN mission in New York declined to comment, and neither the White House nor Ukraine's mission to the United Nations immediately responded to separate requests.
US considers sending Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine
This comes as the United States also considers a Ukrainian request to obtain Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of 2,500 kilometers and could easily hit Moscow and most of Russia if fired from Ukraine.
According to US officials cited by the WSJ, the approval for additional intelligence came shortly before Trump posted on social media last week a suggestion that Ukraine could retake all its land occupied by Russia, which marked a striking rhetorical shift in Kiev's favor.
"After seeing the Economic trouble (the war) is causing Russia, I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form," Trump wrote in a Truth Social post after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
According to officials who spoke to The Wall Street Journal, this marks the first time the United States will assist with Ukrainian long-range strikes against energy targets deep inside Russian territory.
Trump has recently set his eyes on Moscow's energy, slapping import tariffs on India to halt its purchases of discounted Russian crude oil, and has been calling out European nations over their purchases of Russian energy.
