More than a dozen of states, including the Venezuelan capital Caracas, have witnessed Friday a massive blackout due to an attack carried out by US-backed anti-government groups, according to the Venezuelan authorities.
The authorities confirmed that 19 out of the country's 23 states were affected by the attack on the electrical system, which caused the electricity blackout.
In a televised statement, Nestor Reverol, Venezuela’s vice president of Public Works and Services and Minister of Electrical Energy, said that a new "vile and criminal attack" targeted the national electricity system, specifically in the El Guri electricity complex, which generates a large part of the country's electricity.
For his part, the Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez condemned the attack and addressed Venezuelans in a tweet, assuring them that workers are putting all their efforts to restore power.
"Nothing will get us out of our way of peace and quiet. Together with Nicolas Maduro, the people will win!” Rodriguez expressed.
Earlier, Rodriguez announced that the authorities will provide in the near future evidence of acts of sabotage that were recorded in previous years, which led to long power outages throughout the country.
This is not the first time Venezuelan states plunge into darkness due to attacks. In fact, Venezuela suffered three national blackouts in 2019 caused by saboteurs according to authorities, some lasting for three days.
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has previously accused the opposition of planning "to accompany the blackout with general violence.”
