White House: Biden announces US support for NATO open door policy
The White House says that the US President spoke with the leader of Sweden and Finland.
The White House announced on Friday that President Joe Biden spoke with the leaders of Sweden and Finland by telephone.
The US President emphasized during the phone call his support for NATO's Open Door policy and for each country's right to decide to join the alliance.
The White House's Press release said Biden spoke with Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson and Finnish President Sauli Niinisto to discuss "close defense and security cooperation."
"President Biden underscored his support for NATO’s Open Door policy and for the right of Finland and Sweden to decide their own future, foreign policy and security arrangements," the statement read.
Russia's deputy representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky said on Thursday Sweden and Finland would potentially become targets for the Russian military and force Moscow to take action if they are admitted to NATO.
