Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed hope that all parties involved in the conflict in Ukraine will reach a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement that addresses the root causes of the crisis.
Earlier on Monday, China Central Television (CCTV) reported that Xi held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump.
"China hopes that all parties will continuously narrow their differences and reach a fair, lasting and binding peace agreement that addresses the root causes of the crisis as soon as possible," Xi was quoted by the CCTV as saying during the conversation with Trump.
Xi also reiterated that China supports all international efforts aimed at achieving peace, highlighting Beijing’s continued role as a mediator in global conflict resolution.
US and Ukraine report progress in peace negotiations
Meanwhile, US and Ukrainian officials reported a significant breakthrough in Ukraine peace negotiations on Sunday, following a fresh round of talks on Washington's proposed peace framework.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking at the US mission in Geneva, said the opening session marked a key step forward in efforts to end the conflict.
The talks were described as “probably the most productive and meaningful meeting so far in this entire process,” according to Rubio, who noted that negotiators were tackling key issues “point by point” with contributions from all sides.
"We're working through making some changes, some adjustments, in the hopes of further narrowing the differences and getting closer to something that both Ukraine and obviously the United States are very comfortable with," he added.
Ukraine’s Presidential Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak also offered a positive assessment of the meeting.
"I want to confirm that we have (a) very productive first session with distinguished American delegation," Yermak said. "We have very good progress, and we are moving forward to the just and lasting peace Ukrainian people deserve and want this peace more than anyone in this planet."
