De Bruyne: World Cup Every Two Years "Not A Bad Idea"
Belgium international and Manchester City attacker Kevin De Bruyne says FIFA's proposal of a World Cup every two years can be implemented "as long as everyone works together."
Manchester City attacker Kevin De Bruyne said on Friday a proposal to hold the World Cup every two years was "not a bad idea."
FIFA's World Cup scheme was introduced earlier this year by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who now works as chief of global football development for the governing body.
The proposal has been widely criticized by several football associations such as UEFA and the English Premier League.
"At the start of the season, I had a meeting with FIFA and Arsene Wenger to explain to us what they wanted to do," De Bruyne told news agency Belga.
The Belgian star stressed that all football federations, UEFA, and FIFA have to cooperate with each other to guarantee the success of the proposed plan.
De Bruyne mentioned that he insisted during the meeting on the importance of "a real resting period" for the players at the end of the season.
"The idea isn't bad in itself, as long as everyone works together," he added.
De Bruyne, 30, is set to feature as Belgium host Estonia on Saturday and then travel to Wales on Monday in qualifiers for next year's World Cup.
Belgium is only two points away from claiming a place at the FIFA World Cup 2022 that will be held in Qatar.
