France's striker Karim Benzema won on Monday the men's Ballon d'Or award, at a ceremony in Paris. The reward is the result of his stunning performances that contributed to Real Madrid winning the Champions League and La Liga last season.

Benzema, the first French player who wins the most prestigious individual prize in football since Zinedine Zidane in 1998, scored 44 goals in 46 games for his club including 15 in the Champions League.

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti praised Benzema as a team leader, adding: “If we’re here it’s largely due to his merits, he scored a lot of goals, he finished the season well, he scored a goal today and now he’s going for the Ballon d’Or award”.
