Steve Bruce Leaves Newcastle After Saudi Takeover
Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce has left the club by mutual consent, barely 13 days after the Saudi Arabia-backed £305 million takeover was completed.
In Sunday's 3-2 defeat against Tottenham, 60-year-old Steve Bruce attended his 1,000th game as a manager - and his only one under the new ownership.
"There have been highs and lows," Bruce said, adding that he hoped the new owners could "take the club forward."
After his contract was fully paid up, Bruce is thought to have collected over £8 million.
The Premier League club will be temporarily led by interim manager Graeme Jones, until the announcement of a new manager "in due course".
The Tyneside team has started the Premier League season without a win and is currently second from the bottom following three draws in their first eight games.
Bruce took over as manager of the Magpies in July 2019 and led them to 13th and 12th place finishes in his first two seasons.
"I am grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club," said Bruce, adding, "I would like to thank my coaching team, the players, and the support staff in particular for all their hard work."
"Newcastle would like to acknowledge its gratitude to Steve for his service and wishes him well for the future," according to a Newcastle statement.
The club's next match is at Crystal Palace on Saturday, October 23.
