Syrian wins gold medal at 2023 Arab Sports Games in Algeria

The Qatari delegation to the Arab Sports Games kicks off its journey in the games with a silver medal in athletics.

Syrian swimmer Omar Abbas on Wednesday won the gold medal in the 400-meter freestyle race, in the competitions of the 2023 Arab Games held in Algeria.

Judoka Adam Tawouk won four silver medals for Syria in the under 66 kg competitions, while Hassan Bayan, Laila Kanaan, and Dana Khachik grasped the bronze medals in the under 73 kg, 48 kg, and 52 kg competitions respectively.

Alaa Abdel Salam from the Syrian national special sports team, also won Syria’s first silver medal at the Games in the iron ball throwing competition for the F-53 category.

In the same context, Oman's Olympic team achieved its first victory in the football competition by defeating its Lebanese counterpart 1-0, scored by Ahed bin Al-Habashi from a direct free kick in the 41st minute of the match.

While the Omani team raised its winning points to four, the Lebanese team lost its second match in a row, practically bidding farewell to the tournament. In another match, the Syrian and Palestinian drew 0-0.

On its part, the Qatari delegation kicked off its journey in the games with a silver medal in athletics. Hammdy Al-Ameen nailed the silver medal in the men’s high jump competition, recording a 2.16 meters-leap.

The 2023 Arab Sports Games just kicked off in Algeria. They mark the 13th edition of the Pan Arab Games.

Held every four years, this edition is scheduled to take place in Algeria, from July 5th to 15th, 2023, showcasing the athletic prowess of participating nations.

The inaugural Arab Sports Games was held in Alexandria, Egypt, back in 1953. Since then, it has grown to become a prominent sporting event in the Arab world.

Egyptian athletes have consistently displayed their dominance throughout the history of the Arab Sports Games. To date, Egypt boasts an impressive record of 621 gold medals, 426 silver medals, and 375 bronze medals.

The 2023 Arab Sports Games will be hosted across five cities in Algeria, namely Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba, and Tipaza.

The prestigious Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers, with a seating capacity of 64,200, has been chosen as the venue for both the grand opening and closing ceremonies. This iconic stadium will witness breathtaking displays of talent, unity, and cultural celebrations throughout the event.
