Tehran to host Russia, Iran friendly football match
Despite Russia being banned from competing in most sports, the Russian men's national team is set to face Iran in Tehran during November.
Russia's football federation announced that the Russian men's national team will face the Iranian team, with the match likely to take place in Iran capital, Tehran.
Russia is currently banned from competing in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and FIFA events over the war in Ukraine, which prevented it from a chance to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
However, the Russian team is set to face Iran, which will compete against USA, England, and Wales in the coming World Cup.
According to Match TV, Iran's capital, Tehran, will host the Russian team in a game scheduled in November, with a date and location to be confirmed later.
On May 2, the UEFA announced that Russia's national soccer team along with the country's club sides have been banned from European competition next season.
The Switzerland-based governing body of European football pointed out that Russia's bid to host the Euro 2028 or the Euro 2032 tournaments have also been declared ineligible.
UEFA claimed that its decision to rule Russia out as a host followed its regulations that each bidder should "not act in a manner that could bring UEFA, the UEFA final or UEFA final phase, any other bidder the bidding procedure or European football into disrepute."
It is noteworthy that the war in Ukraine has drawn unprecedented sanctions against Russia that caused its ban from most international sports.
