With Algerian dominance, 2023 Arab Sports Games concludes in Algiers

In a dazzling closing ceremony, the 15th edition of the Arab Sports Games concludes, with Algeria achieving the most gold medals.

The 15th edition of the Arab Sports Games was concluded on Saturday evening in the Algerian capital, Algiers. During the closing ceremony, it was announced that Saudi Arabia will host the 16th version of the Games in 2027.

For 11 days, five Algerian cities, namely Algiers, Oran, Constantine, Annaba, and Tipaza, hosted athletes from numerous Arab nations competing to showcase athletic prowess.

In the first part of the closing ceremony, which was held in the Mohamed Boudiaf Olympic Complex in Algiers, the Algerian national anthem was played followed by the heads of the participating Arab delegations entering the stadium, followed by a group of participating athletes.

Algeria handed over the flag of the Union of Arab National Olympic Committees to Saudi Arabia.

The second part of the ceremony, which was attended by senior Arab officials and diplomatic representatives, saw an aesthetic cultural and musical show that shed light on Algerian history, culture, and heritage through performances by artists and bands representing various Algerian musical genres that abound in the rich and diverse Algerian art.

The 15th edition of the Arab Sports Games concluded with Algeria achieving great results in most sports, as the country ranked first in the medal standings with 253 medals, including 105 gold, 76 silver, and 72 bronze. Tunisia, Morocco, Bahrain, and Jordan came in second, third, fourth, and fifth respectively. 

It is noteworthy that nearly 2,000 male and female athletes from 21 Arab countries participated in the games.

Held every four years, this edition of the Arab Sports Games took place from July 5th to 15th.

The inaugural Arab Sports Games was held in Alexandria, Egypt, back in 1953. Since then, it has grown to become a prominent sporting event in the Arab world.
