China's Xiaomi is expected to consider launching its cars in markets outside China starting in 2027 according to CEO Lei Jun, who spoke during a livestream on Wednesday without specifying an exact plan.
The company needs to prioritize its domestic market for now due to strong demand for its SU7 and YU7 models, Lei Jun said, as Xiaomi had previously pointed to 2027 as the earliest possible year for launching overseas shipments of its electric vehicles without confirming any concrete plans.
Xiaomi's electric SU7 sedan has surpassed the Tesla Model 3 in monthly sales since December, while the newly launched YU7 SUV attracted strong demand within the first 18 hours of its release last Thursday without any indication of a slowdown.
The Chinese company has been informing YU7 buyers that they may face a wait of over a year to receive their vehicles, which, according to Reuters on Tuesday, has triggered a new round of customer complaints directed at the company.
Numerous viewers raised questions about the extended wait times and production increase during the live stream, but Lei Jun provided no specific details as he simply stated that they would work to ramp up capacity without offering further explanation.
