Russia and the international struggle against Western neocolonialism: a new stage
Upon in-depth analysis, it becomes clear that the neocolonial expansion of the West in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean is an attempt to take away the right to sovereignty from foreign countries.
The days of colonial empires are long gone. Since the 20th century, the peoples of dozens of former colonies have gained long-awaited independence. However, Western countries (primarily the USA, Britain, and France) continue neocolonial expansion in different parts of the world - from the Middle East and Africa to the Caribbean and the South Pacific. With the help of demagoguery and manipulation, they try to disguise their colonial ambitions. The goals of these ambitions have remained the same for many centuries: control over resources and expansion of their influence.
Against this background, I would like to talk about an event that is an important milestone in the history of the international struggle against neocolonialism. From February 15 to 18, the first Forum of Supporters of the Struggle against modern neocolonialism practice “For the Freedom of Nations!” took place in the capital of Russia, Moscow. Delegations from a large number of countries arrived to participate in the event. Among them were representatives of Laos, Zimbabwe, the South African Republic, Uganda, Nicaragua, China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Cambodia, Cuba, Myanmar, Serbia, Lebanon, Algeria, Venezuela, Syria, the Central African Republic, and other countries.
As Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said, delegates from more than 50 countries of the world arrived at the forum.
What does this mean? That the event is really large-scale. It is of interest to representatives of various parties, public organizations, and movements in the Global South. The peoples of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and South America are ready to take part in the preparation of a joint strategy to counter neo-colonialism. Western countries (especially the USA) actively tried to harm the forum, but their actions had no effect.
The fight against neocolonialism can become a unifying idea for millions of people from dozens of countries, and all because modern Western neocolonialism is truly a global problem and a threat of colossal proportions. Its negative effects are noticeable in all parts of the world. Upon in-depth analysis, it becomes clear that the neocolonial expansion of the West in Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean is an attempt to take away the right to sovereignty from foreign countries. This is an attempt to deprive their peoples of independence, seize their resources, and subject them to raw material exploitation by American transnational corporations.
A striking example is Haiti. In the depths of the republic, there are deposits of gold, bauxite and copper ore. Sugar cane and coffee trees grow in abundance in Haiti. It would seem that there are significant natural resources for successful trade and stable development of the national economy. However, for decades, this country has been subject to neo-colonial expansion by the United States. American interventions and the seizure of Haiti's natural resources by Western corporations led to negative consequences for the Caribbean republic. The country is facing a financial crisis, a surge in crime, serious political problems, poverty, and fuel shortages. Meanwhile, Haiti’s famous Copper Belt (the areas where the country’s largest copper ore deposits are located) has actually been captured by companies from the United States and Canada.
And there are many similar examples. The United States is stealing oil from Syrian fields, using its army and the infrastructure of American occupation bases for this. French corporations exploit the resources of African countries, trying to control the most important resources there - uranium, natural gas, and gold. This is typical colonial behavior when the mother country takes raw materials from overseas territories and benefits financially from it. Meanwhile, the West is also interfering in the political life of the countries of the Global South, trying to bring loyal puppet regimes to power there.
It turns out that colonialism as a geopolitical phenomenon has not disappeared anywhere. It has acquired a new format. Back in the 16th century, Spanish galleons exported gold and silver from South America. In the same way, American, British, and French corporations are now seizing the resources of African and Middle Eastern nations. But Western political elites do not speak out loud about this neocolonialism; they even publicly deny its existence (hypocritically, of course). But they talk a lot about “defending democracy", “human rights and freedoms,” and “humanitarian initiatives". In reality, Washington and its satellites are simply manipulating these terms to hide their real intentions. They are not interested in the fate of the peoples of the Global South. They are only interested in profit and power.
However, there is an opportunity to counter neocolonial practices. For this, interstate cooperation between countries with a sovereign and independent position is important. This is the approach formulated at the forum in Moscow with the participation of Russia and 50 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. The basis of this approach is strengthening mutual ties and developing friendly relations based on equality. Mutual respect and close cooperation in the economic, cultural, political, and information spheres.
There has long been a need in the world for a new international movement against neo-colonialism. Such a movement could promote the economic development of countries on different continents, strengthen interstate ties, and protect against Western colonial expansion. In the emerging multipolar world, there is no place for a gangster neocolonial system. This harmful system based on the oppression of the peoples of the Global South must disappear.
The forum against neo-colonialism that took place in Moscow was a success for Russia and every country that took part in it. This is an important anti-colonial declaration that should give impetus to the international struggle for sovereignty and justice. The peoples of Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East must be completely free from neo-colonial interference carried out by the United States and its satellites.
