Scream 7 Director Christopher Landon announced that he was leaving the franchise following the firing of Melissa Barrera over her support of the Palestinian cause and the subsequent resignation of star Jenna Ortega in solidarity with her colleague.

Landon resigned weeks ago, he said on X as he broke the news to the franchise's fans. "I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago."

He stressed that what was a "dream job" turned into a "nightmare", saying his heart was broken "for everyone involved" though he noted that it was "time to move on."

"I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world," the Director said.

Actress Melissa Barrera has been kicked from starring in Scream VII after sharing social media posts being pro-Palestine.

"Gaza is currently being treated like a concentration camp," she wrote in her Instagram story.

She added, "Cornering everyone together, with no where to go, no electricity no water … People have learnt nothing from our histories. And just like our histories, people are still silently watching it all happen. THIS IS GENOCIDE & ETHNIC CLEANSING."

A spokesperson for Spyglass, the entertainment company behind the Scream film franchise, released a statement in response.

"Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."

Barrera's 2022 feature earned $137.7 million globally. She also starred in Scream VI, which topped $168.9 million at the global box office.

Happy Death Day's Landon issued a now-deleted statement in the wake of Barrera's firing, saying it was "not my decision to make" and calling on fans of the movie to "stop yelling".
