Typhoon Fung-wong ravaged the northern Philippines overnight, killing at least two people and forcing the evacuation of more than one million residents as it made landfall in Aurora Province late Sunday.

The storm, locally named "Uwan", struck the eastern town of Dinalungan as a super typhoon, lashing parts of Luzon island with fierce winds, heavy rain, and storm surges through the night. In Isabela Province’s northern city of Santiago, houses were damaged and trees and electric posts toppled.

“We could not sleep last night because of the winds hitting our metal sheets and the tree branches falling,” Romeo Mariano, who was sheltering with his grandmother, told Reuters. “Almost all of the tree branches nearby fell, and when we got out to check our home, we saw the damage,” he added.

At least two people were killed and two others injured, according to an early report from the Civil Defense office. Aurora vice governor Patrick Alexis Angara said at least three towns were inaccessible due to landslides and damaged roads. “Assessment and clearing operations are underway,” Angara told broadcaster DZMM.

Storm heads for South China Sea after lashing the Philippines

The state weather agency said the typhoon had moved into the South China Sea by Monday and was forecast to head northeast toward Taiwan. It warned that much of the country continued to face threats of heavy rains, strong winds, and storm swells in coastal regions.

Fung-wong is the 21st storm to hit the Philippines this year, arriving shortly after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed 224 people in the country and five more in Vietnam.
