Dozens of Inmates Killed in Ecuador Prison Clashes
Police report up to 68 prisoners killed and 12 wounded in another round of prison clashes in Penitenciaria del Litoral in Guayaquil.
Police sources reported that at least 68 inmates have been killed in violent clashes in a prison in Ecuador’s largest city of Guayaquil.
On Saturday, Police General Tannya Varela told reporters that 12 more prisoners were injured in the brawl at a facility where 119 prisoners were slain in a September riot between rival gangs.
The most recent incident in Penitenciaria del Litoral, on the outskirts of Guayaquil in Guayas province, was one of numerous in the prison in recent months.
In Ecuador's unstable jail system, where thousands of inmates linked to drug gangs engage in violent conflicts that frequently devolve into riots, about 300 prisoners have been slain this year.
Residents living near the prison reported hearing continuous gunshots and explosions from inside the prison and relatives of inmates gathered for information on their loved ones.
