The report said, citing Tate County Sheriff Brad Lance, that all the shootings occurred within the Arkabutla community, adding that the suspect was detained and taken into custody without revealing further details on his identity.

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves said on his Twitter account that it is believed that the killer acted alone.

“I will ensure that the full resources of the state are available to law enforcement as we continue to investigate the situation,” the governor said, adding that "the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) has been asked to assist on the investigation."

The shooting came at the height of a current incident in the series of mass shootings in the US that took place on Monday at Michigan State University, in which three students were killed on the eve of the five-year anniversary of the Parkland High School shooting, which killed 17 people, mostly students.

Gun Violence Archive reported there have been more than 70 mass shootings in the United States this year.

Recently, the United States has been rocked by a succession of high-profile mass shootings, including in schools, churches, grocery stores, and hospitals. The incidents have collectively left dozens dead.
