Spanish Volcano Activity Suspends Flights, Increases Evacuations
A Spanish volcano's activity in La Palma island led to the suspension of flights and more evacuations.
Officials on the Spanish island of La Palma ordered more evacuations as a result of the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano. In addition, flights to and from the island have been suspended because of volcanic ash, according to Spain's Airport Operator website AENA.
Canary Islands' Binter Airlines tweeted that it had canceled flights to La Palma and La Gomera due to the volcanic ash.
PM Sanchez calls for immediate aid
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has remained on the island since eruptions started last Sunday.
Sanchez told reporters on Friday that the government has approved "immediate financial aid for housing" to cover the damages inflicted on the people.
Angel Victor Torres, President of the Canary Islands, said that up to 400 homes and buildings had already been destroyed by the lava, according to reports in Spanish media.
