The site of the tower is located in the Sidi Bishr district where holidaymakers frequently rent apartments on special occasions such as Eid el-Adha, which begins on Tuesday.

According to the deputy head of Alexandria's provincial health authority, about four people have been injured in the collapse so far. Several cars parked in the vicinity were also damaged.

An investigation has been launched by Egypt’s chief prosecutor, sources say, adding that a subcontractor responsible for building the high-rise has already been detained.
