Rescue teams in Indonesia were searching Thursday for 43 people still missing after a ferry sank overnight in rough seas near the resort island of Bali, AP reported.
According to the National Search and Rescue Agency, the ferry KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya went down nearly 30 minutes after departing from Ketapang Port in East Java late Wednesday. It was en route to Gilimanuk Port in Bali, a journey of about 50 kilometers (30 miles).
The vessel was carrying 53 passengers, 12 crew members, and 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks, the agency said.
So far, two bodies have been recovered and 20 people rescued, many of them found unconscious after drifting for hours in choppy waters, according to Banyuwangi police chief Rama Samtama Putra.
Nine boats, including tugboats and inflatable craft, have been deployed since Wednesday night, working through darkness and battling waves as high as two meters (6.5 feet) in the ongoing search for survivors.
Ferry accidents are not uncommon in Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 17,000 islands, where sea transport is heavily relied upon and enforcement of safety standards can be inconsistent.
