Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty received on Saturday a delegation from the Palestinian Fatah movement in Cairo to discuss the current developments in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in light of the ongoing brutal Israeli escalation.
The delegation was headed by Major General Jibril Rajoub, Secretary of the Fatah Central Committee, and included Rawhi Fattouh, President of the Palestinian National Council, and Mohammad Shtayyeh, member of the Fatah Central Committee and former Palestinian Prime Minister.
During the meeting, Abdelatty recalled Egypt's efforts to restore the ceasefire in Gaza and the immediate resumption of humanitarian aid entries, stressing his country's steadfast support for the Palestinian Authority and its rejection of "Israel's" continued underestimation of Palestinian unity, particularly its lands, in light of the attempts to separate Gaza and the West Bank.
He also emphasized Egypt’s complete rejection of the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza and the West Bank, as well as "Israel’s" aggressive policies in the region, including the "excessive use of military force with no regard for the principles of international humanitarian law, and the continued extreme practices by the Israeli occupation against civilians, treating itself as a state above the law."
"Illusions of power will not help Israel achieve the security it seeks," Abdelatty emphasized, noting that the atrocities it commits will only fuel hatred and a desire for revenge against it in the region, creating further obstacles to the so-called "peaceful coexistence" and severely undermining its own security, stability, and the prospects for achieving "lasting peace."
He also warned of the consequences of the international community's shameful silence on the aggression in occupied Palestinian territories.
The Egyptian foreign minister further reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of the forced displacement of Palestinians and called on the Arab-Islamic plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip.
Lastly, Abdelatty highlighted the importance of strengthening Palestinian unity and the role of the Palestinian Authority to fulfill the Palestinian people's aspirations and achieve a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian cause through the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the June 4, 1967 borders, with East al-Quds as its capital.
Egypt forwards new proposal for Gaza ceasefire: Israeli media
This comes after Egypt put forward a new proposal, described as a "mediation for mediation," in an attempt to reach an agreement between "Israel" and Hamas, Israeli media reported on Saturday.
The Israeli Kan 11 channel reported that the Egyptian proposal represents a compromise between the previous two, although the details cannot be disclosed so far.
It is worth noting that one of the previous proposals suggested the release of five living captives, while the other suggested the release of 11 surviving ones.
According to Israeli sources, Israeli officials still believe that "military pressure could contribute to shifting the Hamas movement's stance." However, Kan 11 said it was still unclear whether the reality or Hamas's position would change with more pressure.
