Tokyo Olympics: Venezuela Wins Medal for Chavez
Venezuelan weightlifter Julio Mayora makes a meaningful gesture after winning silver in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Venezuelan weightlifter Julio Mayora showed no hesitation in dedicating his Olympic silver, which he won in the men's 73 kg weightlifting competition, to the soul of the late Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.
Mayora said, in a phone call with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, "I want to wish Hugo Chavez a happy birthday. In fact, I want to dedicate this silver medal on the behalf of president Hugo Chavez's soul."
25-year-old Mayora won the silver medal after coming second to China's Shi Zhiyong, who won gold and broke his own world record.
Mayora had previously won an Olympic bronze in 2019.
Venezuela's various sectors celebrated Mayora's Tokyo 2020 silver.
