Two days prior, the UN's Herat bureau was attacked by gunmen, killing an Afghan police officer. Afghan forces also repelled a Taliban attack on Herat, in western Afghanistan, bordering Iran.
Violence is on the rise in Afghanistan as negotiations for a permanent ceasefire stumble between both parties of the conflict: the Taliban and Afghan government forces.
The UN's Kabul bureau had warned days ago of the rise in civilian casualties during the first half of 2021, reporting 5000 civilian casualties during that period. The report also stated that the Taliban was responsible for 64% of operations that targeted civilians, whereas government forces and their allies were responsible for 24%.
