Washington Considering Moving its Embassy to Kabul Airport
This decision would enable the US to withdraw its diplomats faster as the situation in Afghanistan further deteriorates.
CNN quoted official sources divulging that the US is considering moving its embassy to the Kabul airport “amid the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan.”
The sources pointed out that the decision might enable the US to extract its diplomats from Afghanistan at a faster rate, as the prospects of safe trips from the embassy to the airport seem to diminish.
Approximately 3,000 US troops will be sent to Afghanistan to assist in securing the departure of US diplomats. State Department spokesperson Ned Price said, "the military will be there to help effect an orderly and a safe reduction in our personnel."
This step is a clear indication of the Biden administration’s concern about the situation in Afghanistan, and the failure of the Afghan government to protect major cities.
Earlier today, the US called on its citizens to leave Afghanistan immediately, through a notice published by the American Embassy in Kabul on its website.
The embassy added that its citizens can leave using the available flight options, amid the accelerating movement of the "Taliban" movement across the country.
