The deadly strike which occurred at a busy market in Donetsk has prompted Russia to call for a meeting at the UN Security Council on Monday.
Dmitry Polyanskiy, Deputy Chief of Russia's Permanent Mission in New York, expressed his belief that this "new Ukrainian military atrocity" will be a focal point at the UNSC meeting called for January 22.
The meeting was initially scheduled to address Western arms deliveries to Ukraine, with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov representing the country.
"All those involved and responsible for the attack in Donetsk will be punished. This barbaric terrorist act against the civilian population of the Russian Federation," Lavrov said in reaction to the attack.
A similar attack attack on the city of Belgorod in December 2023 claimed the lives of 24 people and wounded over 100. The attack reportedly involved the use of cluster-mounted Vilkha missiles and shells from a Czech-made RM-70 Vampire multiple-launch rocket system. A session at the UN Security Council was held as a result of it.
