The Sheikh of Al-Azhar, Ahmed al-Tayyeb, met with a European delegation led by Thierry Mariani, a member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee and the Subcommittee on Human Rights.
During a meeting on Monday, al-Tayyeb considered that the West's insistence on imposing a single perspective on the east under the guise of human rights is a provocation to easterners.
On his account, the head of the European delegation considered that the Identity and Democracy Group in the European Parliament is aimed at strengthening identity, adding that Europe is also a victim to a culture that aims to transform citizens into consumers.
He added that a vast majority of Europeans oppose the imposition of values from the West on the East. He further detailed how this resulted from the formation of lobbies that look to increase their wealth and become more notorious on the global market.
The delegation included MP Jerome Rivier, head of the Identity and Democracy Group in the European Parliament and member of the European Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, and Representative Virginie Goron, member of the French delegation to the Identity and Democracy Group.
The Identity and Democracy Group defines itself as a group that "upholds the sovereignty and identity of our European nations and peoples. It wants European cooperation to be based on free and sovereign nations, with more democracy, transparency, and accountability."
The group also says it offers solutions on ways to regain control of the immigration problem in Europe.
It is composed of 10 different member states and actively opposes "the current trend toward a bureaucratically led European superstate," and claims that is the reason why mainstream groups are attempting to silence them.
