Al-Burhan 'Betrayed Aspiration of Sudanese': Feltman
US Envoy for the Horn of Africa Jeffery Feltman urges General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan to "restore the country's civilian-led government," following a coup against the transitional government in Sudan.
A senior US diplomat urged Tuesday Sudanese General Abdul Fattah al-Burhan to restore the "civilian-led government" to restore the country's civilian-led government amidst mediation efforts to resolve the Sudanese issue, which saw a coup overthrowing Sudan's transitional government.
Feltman told reporters he left the Sudanese capital on the eve of October 25 after a series of meetings with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok, between which tensions rose during the past period of time. He also claimed that he knew of Hamdok's arrest after his plane landed.
Feltman said al-Burhan and other military leaders engaged with him at the time "in bad faith."
"They were talking to us how to address the concerns they had through the constitutional means, and instead, as soon as we left, they decided to just turn over the entire negotiating table in favor of military takeover," he said.
Feltman claimed there were Sudanese initiatives to find a way out of the crisis, with the US, the UN, and other international and regional actors engaging in said efforts.
The envoy accused the Burhan-led movement of 'hijacking' and 'betraying' the aspirations of the Sudanese people.
UN Envoy to Sudan Volker Perthes announced that mediation efforts are being exerted to pull the country out of its crisis.
The UN Council on Human Rights announced that it would be holding a special session on Sudan, where the suppression of protestors left 12 dead and 300 wounded over the past week. The Council cited the Central Committee of Doctors in Support of Democratic Forces as their source.
Suspended Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok met with the ambassadors of the so-called troika, which is the United States, the United Kingdom, and Norway, the Ministry of Information in the suspended Sudanese government said in a Facebook statement.
"Hamdok adhered to the legitimacy of his government and the transitional bodies," the Ministry added, asserting that the release of all ministers and the resumption of the government's works is one way to solve the crisis.
