Algeria says rejects any external interference in Libyan affairs
Algeria calls on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to continue providing technical assistance and building the necessary capacities to protect and promote human rights in Libya.
Algeria emphasized on Wednesday the importance of achieving national reconciliation in Libya with the participation of all the Libyan components, within the framework of a comprehensive national project that fulfills their legitimate aspirations to build a democratic state.
Libya has been wracked by division and unrest since the 2011 NATO-backed aggression on the country starting with the overthrow of former President Muammar Gaddafi.
The energy-rich country is split between a United Nations-recognized government in the capital Tripoli in the west and a rival administration that rules from Benghazi and Tobruk in the east.
Presidential elections aimed to unify the fractured country were scheduled for late 2021 but then were postponed indefinitely.
The Algerian delegation, participating in the interactive dialogue session on the UN Human Rights Commissioner's report on technical assistance and capacity-building to improve the human rights situation in Libya, called for the necessary attention to be focused on both the political and security tracks, in addition to the upcoming electoral process in the north African country.
In a statement, the delegation declared Algeria's rejection of any external interference, whether political or military, in the Libyan affairs.
It affirmed that Algeria will continue its full support and complete engagement in the efforts made by the United Nations and the African Union to solve the crisis in Libya.
Algeria also called on the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to continue providing technical assistance and building the necessary capacities to protect and promote human rights in Libya, based on its request and according to its needs.
