Sputnik reported on Wednesday that Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has embarked on his three-day state visit to Russia where he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

His trip is an effort to discuss bilateral relations in addition to a number of issues on the regional and international agenda.

An agreement is anticipated to be signed to strengthen the two nations' strategic partnership, which will complement the partnership agreement previously signed between Russia and Algeria in 2001.

Tebboune is also expected to convene with other Russian senior officials and visit the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

At the Russian–Algerian business forum, the president further confirmed that Russian firms will continue to receive support from Algeria.

"We appeal to Russian companies. Whether private or public, they can count on Algeria's support," Tebboune added.

Against Western wishes

Algeria and Russia have maintained close affinity over the years. Bilateral relations between the two countries have been developing consistently. Algeria is among Russia’s three major trade partners in the African continent.

Algeria abstained from voting on the UN Resolution condemning Russia's special military operation in Ukraine.

In early November, Algeria submitted an official application to join the BRICS, the Al-Shorouk newspaper reported, citing Leila Zaruki, the Algerian Foreign Ministry's special envoy for the international partnership.

The step would help Algeria boost its economic ties with the group's members as the country could develop its cooperation with other countries in areas such as mineral, gas, and water resources, among other things.
