Aoun-Al-Assad meeting friendly: Sources to Al Mayadeen
Informed sources tell Al Mayadeen that the visit of former Lebanese President Michel Aoun to Syria was of a private nature.
The visit of former Lebanese President Michel Aoun to Syria was of a private nature, and his meeting with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad was friendly, informed sources told Al Mayadeen.
The talks between presidents Al-Assad and Aoun revolved around the two countries' bilateral relations and the need to advance them for both their interests, the sources said.
President Al-Assad assured Aoun that Syria hopes that the Lebanese parties reach an agreement to choose a candidate for the presidency without any external interference, the sources indicated.
On his part, the former Lebanese President told Al-Assad that he was sure that Syria would come out victorious and that stability in the county would prevail once again, just as its relations with its Arab surroundings, they added.
Earlier today, Al-Assad expressed during their meeting that he sees Lebanon's strength in its political and economic stability and that the Lebanese people can bring about stability through dialogue and agreement.
He explained how Syria and Lebanon could not consider that their challenges are "isolated" from one another, noting how the recent Arab rapprochement and Syria's rejoining of the Arab League are things that will bring about benefits to both Syria and Lebanon.
He also considered that Syria has overcome its difficult challenges thanks to the awareness of its people and their faith in its army and leadership.
The former Lebanese President underlined that Syria’s prosperity will have a positive impact on Lebanon and its people.
Former Lebanese President Aoun arrived today morning in Damascus and was accompanied by former Lebanese Minister Pierre Raffoul. They were received on the Lebanese-Syrian border by the former Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Abed Al-Karim Ali.
A source close to Aoun told Al Mayadeen that the Lebanese presidential election "is not on the agenda of Aoun's discussion with Al-Assad."
