US President Joe Biden reaffirmed during his first one-on-one meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, that the strong partnership between the United States and the UN is based on common values and principles.
Ahead of his first speech as president before the United Nations General Assembly Tuesday, Biden stressed that “at this moment, those bonds are more important than ever”.
Biden detailed that governments must continue to work together in a system built on international law to deliver "equitable prosperity, peace, and security for everyone."
On his account, Guterres signaled the strong cooperation between the United States and the UN, describing it as a fundamental pillar for the work of the UN.
The UN Chief stated that despite ongoing political disagreements, the US and China should cooperate on climate change and engage in more robust trade and technology negotiations.
At the start of the UN general assembly’s summit week, the UN secretary-general had also voiced concern about a potential new Cold War between the US and China, warning that a new cold war would be more dangerous and difficult to manage than the previous one.
