The BRICS bloc has officially scheduled its 17th annual summit for July 6–7, 2025, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as announced by the group's press office. This marks a significant event in the bloc's evolution, following its recent expansion and growing influence in global economic and political affairs.
"The date and location of the BRICS summit in 2025 have been confirmed. It will take place in Rio de Janeiro from July 6-7," the press office said.
Brazil's Priorities as BRICS Chair
Brazil assumed the rotating presidency of BRICS on January 1, 2025, and has outlined five key priorities for the bloc:
- Trade and Investment Facilitation – Promoting economic integration through enhanced payment systems and financial cooperation.
- AI Regulation – Advocating for inclusive and responsible governance of artificial intelligence to support sustainable development.
- Climate Change Action – Strengthening financing mechanisms to support global environmental efforts, in coordination with the COP30 climate summit, also to be held in Brazil.
- Public Health Cooperation – Advancing joint initiatives to improve healthcare systems among BRICS members.
- Institutional Development – Enhancing the internal governance and operational efficiency of BRICS.
To advance these goals, Brazil is hosting over 100 ministerial and technical meetings in Brasília from February to July 2025, leading up to the leaders' summit in Rio.
Expanded Membership
The 2025 BRICS summit comes as the bloc continues to grow. In January 2025, Indonesia officially joined BRICS as a full member, following the admission of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE in 2024.
This expansion reflects BRICS' increasing relevance as a counterweight to Western-led institutions and its commitment to representing the interests of the Global South.
Key Topics on the Agenda
Discussions at the summit are expected to focus on:
- Strengthening economic ties and trade among BRICS nations.
- Reforming global financial institutions to better serve emerging economies.
- Advancing digital governance, particularly in artificial intelligence.
- Coordinating multilateral action on climate change and sustainability.
- Addressing geopolitical challenges affecting member states.
As the host country, Brazil is leveraging the summit to bolster its diplomatic leadership and push for deeper multilateral cooperation. The Rio BRICS Committee has been set up to oversee preparations, and the official BRICS Brazil 2025 website has been launched to provide updates on the bloc's initiatives.
