The Chinese ambassador to Iran highlighted the promising potential for collaboration between the two nations within the BRICS framework.

Cong Peiwu emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the economic and multilateral domains, describing BRICS as an excellent platform to enhance economic ties between countries in the Global South.

“In addition to constructive interaction between member states, the activities of this group lead to the expansion of cooperation with other countries as well,” Peiwu stated.

He also noted that BRICS interactions extend beyond trade, encompassing cross-border e-commerce, digital economy, artificial intelligence, innovation, and technology.

In his remarks on Saturday, Ambassador Cong stressed the importance of supporting the development of an open global economy and criticized the unilateral measures and economic threats imposed on Iran and China as "irrational".

"All countries should support the open and win-win [global] economy, and in this regard, we firmly oppose the unilateral actions and economic threats of certain countries," he affirmed.

In March, IRNA reported that trade exchanges between Iran and China increased by 37 percent in the first two months of 2024 compared to the same period last year.

Chinese customs data showed that trade between the two countries reached $2.879 billion in January and February this year, up from $2.098 billion last year.

Chinese exports to Iran rose by 45 percent, amounting to $2.05 billion, while Iranian exports to China increased by 20 percent, totaling $829 million.

Analysts believe China's actual imports from Iran could be higher, as official statistics do not include Iranian oil purchases by Chinese refineries.
