China Ambassador discusses Russia, US, Taiwan in Aspen Security Forum
China Ambassador in Washington Qin Gang stresses that China does not want war with Taiwan and notes that China-US relations have not recovered since Trump, stressing that Biden must act on words.
Today, Wednesday, China's Ambassador to Washington Qin Gang commented on several issues during the Aspen Security Forum, a non-partisan public venue made for international leaders to discuss the most pressing national security and foreign policy challenges.
The Ambassador brought on the war in Ukraine, saying that "What China is calling for is an immediate ceasefire, resumption of peace talks. All parties involved should be engaged including Russia and the United States and its NATO allies."
He called on all parties to "sit down, calm down to find a way out of dilemma based on the principles of accommodating each other's legitimate concerns."
Regarding the Chinese-Russian ties, Qin said that they are not an alliance and are not directed against any third country.
"China-Russia relationship is not an alliance, it's not for confrontation, it's not targeting any third party."
The Ambassador also addressed the relations between China and the US, saying that their ties have not recovered since the Trump administration but hoped that President Joe Biden's words are backed by actions.
“China-US relations haven't gotten out of the difficulties caused by the previous administration, and it's facing mounting challenges today, but we have noted that the Biden administration has as a very serious commitment about China-US relations," he said.
China wants to avoid war With Taiwan, does not want to hurt compatriots
Regarding the recent tensions with Taiwan, Qin said the Chinese government is doing everything possible to avoid a war with the island.

“People on both banks of the Taiwan Straight, are our compatriots. The last thing we would like to do is to fight our compatriots, so we will do everything we can with the greatest sincerity to achieve a peaceful reunification,” he said, emphasizing the necessity to respect the One-China principle, which is vital for bilateral relations with Washington but has been undermined in recent years.
“We urge the United States to honor its commitments with actions and to fully implement the One-China policy,” Qin said.
"As ambassador, I know my responsibility. My job is to follow through on the important mutual understanding between President Xi and President Biden to make sure that China-US relations are stable, manageable and constructive," Qin said, adding, "We want to build trust, respect and to reduce misunderstanding and miscalculation."
Qin pointed out that the two nations have differences, but this does not justify misinformation, lies, and malicious attacks.
