China has vowed to take “countermeasures” to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity in response to the $2 billion arms sale from the United States to Taiwan.

On Friday, the Pentagon announced the approval of a potential arms package valued at $2 billion for Taiwan, which includes an advanced air defense missile system, surface-to-air missile systems, and radar equipment.

In a statement released late Saturday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry strongly condemned and firmly opposed the sales, stating that it has lodged “solemn representations” with the United States.

China called on the US to immediately halt its arms sales to Taiwan and to cease its “dangerous moves” that threaten peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The ministry added, “China will take resolute countermeasures and take all measures necessary to firmly defend national sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.”

The big picture

In recent years, Chinese military activities around Taipei have intensified, particularly with the Taiwanese government rejecting Beijing’s claim over the island. This month saw a new round of military drills by China.

Taipei welcomed the latest arms sale, marking the 17th under the Biden administration. In response to China’s threats, Taiwan stated, “We are duty-bound to protect our homeland and will continue to demonstrate our determination to defend ourselves.”

The potential $2 billion arms package is currently pending approval from the US Congress. According to the Pentagon, the deal includes three NASAMS medium-range air defense systems equipped with advanced AMRAAM Extended Range surface-to-air missiles.

Beijing strongly opposed the US arms sales to Taiwan, criticizing Washington for aiding what it perceives as efforts to promote "Taiwan independence" through militarization. China also resolutely opposes the US interference in Taiwan affairs in any way or under any pretext.
