China Hu escorted out of CCP congress due to feeling unwell: Xinhua
Reports about former Chinese President Hu Jintao being escorted out of the CCP congress in a bid to "silence" him have been slammed down by China.
Former Chinese President Hu Jintao was escorted out of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) Congress during the session's closing ceremony due to feeling unwell, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported on Saturday in light of footage and reports surrounding the debacle.
Many people opposed to Beijing tried to paint the incident as the CCP trying to "silence" and "exclude" its opposition, but the reports slam the allegations raised against China.
According to Xinhua, its reporter Liu Jiawen learned that 79-year-old Hu had insisted on attending the closing session despite having been "taking time to recuperate recently."
Upon feeling "unwell" during the event, Hu was led out of the hall to rest, Xinhua added, noting that he was doing "much better" now.
Hu was the president of China from 2003 until 2013, serving two full five-year terms, and he was succeeded by Xi Jinping.
The former Chinese president and CCP secretary-general was sitting to the left of his successor in the Great Hall of the People in the Chinese capital before a steward came in and escorted him off the stage of the main auditorium.
Video footage published by Chinese media showed a steward trying to lift Hu from his seat as the latter refused to get up before putting his hand on a paper placed on top of Xi's folder.
The congress, held once every five years, concluded with amendments to the party's constitution bolstering the CCP's ranks and guiding the role of the party's ideology.
The CCP's National Congress was held from October 16-22, with the party approving various amendments and laws.
The delegates unanimously approved a resolution on the report of the 19th Central Committee of the CCP, a resolution on the report on the work of the 19th Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, and a resolution on amendments to the party charter.
The first plenum of the 20th Central Committee of the CCP will take place on Sunday and appoint the senior leadership of the party - members of the CPC Politburo and its Standing Committee - which will lead the country in the next five years.
