Displacement of Palestinians an existential threat to Jordan: PM
Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher al-Khawaneh expressed that mass displacement of Palestinians would "dilute and endanger" a possible two-state solution as well as threaten the "Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan."
The Jordanian Prime Minister Bisher al-Khawaneh warned Tuesday that a potential mass migration of Palestinians might represent an existential danger to Jordan and violate the Jordan-Israeli peace pact.
Expressing more worry about a potential violation of the peace treaty with the Israeli occupation rather than the over 24,000 Palestinians murdered in Gaza, al-Khasawneh expressed at the World Economic Forum in Davos that mass displacement is a "clear violation of Article 2 of the Jordan-Israeli peace treaty."
He detailed that this would "dilute and endanger" the potential of reaching a two-state solution and would "pose an existential threat to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan that we will have to react to."
He expressed optimism that this would never happen, adding that Jordan is "firmly committed to comprehensive peace" and the two-state solution.
The Israeli genocidal war on the Strip has reached 24,100 martyrs and 60,834 injuries after 101 days of war.
This death toll, however, remains provisional, as thousands of Palestinians remain missing or under the rubble since October 7.
On Monday, Al Mayadeen's correspondent in Gaza reported that 33 Palestinians were brutally killed and dozens were injured as a result of the intense Israeli bombing of residential homes in Gaza City at dawn.
Our correspondent also noted that occupation aircraft launched raids on the city of Deir al-Balah in the middle of the Gaza Strip and east of Khan Younis, to the south of Gaza, at dawn.
He stressed that Israeli occupation artillery is violently targeting the center of Khan Younis, in addition to violent and continuous bombing by the IOF targeting homes of Palestinians near a school being used as a refuge by Palestinians who fled their homes in al-Maghazi camp, central Gaza Strip.
Jordan warns Blinken, rejecting attempts to displace Palestinians
Last week, during his meeting with King Abdullah, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken was told that Jordan completely rejects the forced displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as the King stressed the necessity of “enabling the people of Gaza to return to their homes.”
King Abdullah II “warned of the catastrophic repercussions" of the war in Gaza while calling on the US to press for an immediate ceasefire, a statement by the Royal Court said.
He pointed out that Jordan categorically rejects the forced displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, which constitutes a clear violation of international law, adding, “We reject attempts to separate Gaza and the West Bank because they are an extension of the one Palestinian state.”
On January 10, Jordanian monarch King Abdullah II hosted summit talks in the Jordanian port city of Aqaba with the leaders of Egypt, Abdel Fattah el-Sissi, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, to discuss the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The purpose of the summit is to discuss "the dangerous developments in Gaza and the situation in the West Bank," according to King Abdullah II.
He added that this summit comes as part of efforts "to coordinate Arab positions to push for an immediate cease-fire in Gaza and ensure the uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian aid."
