Erdogan called on the EU to act more courageously in developing relations with Turkey
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his hope that the EU develop its relations with his country in 2022.
Erdogan stressed, during a meeting with ambassadors in Ankara on Thursday, that the “The EU needs to prevent attempts to sabotage Turkey-EU relations with the excuse of inter-bloc solidarity," referencing the EU's pro-Greece and pro-Greek Cypriot administration stances.
The Turkish President expressed hope that the EU would abandon its "strategic shortsightedness" in 2022, and would act more "courageously" in developing relations with Turkey.
He also noted that objective observers realize that Turkey plays an important role in overcoming the challenges faced by the EU, adding that if it wasn't for Turkey's efforts, the migrant crisis would have gotten worse, more lives would have been lost, terrorism would have gotten stronger, and chaos would have spread even wider.
Turkey has been having difficult relations with Europe lately, mainly due to its increased drilling for gas in the Eastern Mediterranean, sparking disagreement with Greece and Cyprus, and also pushing the EU to sanction it last year.
