The EU Parliament may declare "Israel's" actions in Gaza "genocide" for the first time in an upcoming vote next week.
The European Parliament will hold a session titled "Stopping the Genocide in Gaza: Time for EU Sanctions" during its June 16-19 plenary meeting in Strasbourg, with the debate scheduled for next Wednesday.
The Left group in the European Parliament explained in a statement that this initiative follows numerous unsuccessful attempts to include the matter on the agenda and comes more than 16 months after the International Court of Justice initially urged "Israel" to implement measures preventing potential genocidal actions in Gaza.
The session will further examine increasing demands for the EU to implement sanctions against "Israel" as the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza continues to worsen.
According to the Left’s statement, groups such as Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, the UN Special Committee on Israeli Practices in Occupied Territories, and the Palestinian Center for Human Rights, argue that the situation in Gaza exhibits patterns of violence, displacement, and systemic harm that, in their view, align with the legal definition of genocide.
The statement further highlighted that "Israel" has failed to adhere to the provisional measures mandated by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which were intended to prevent potential acts that could be classified as genocide.
In the written statement, Left Co-Chair Manon Aubry stated that the European Commission "continues business as usual with Israel" under their Association Agreement, while welcoming the European Parliament's use of the term "genocide" as a major step forward.
'Israel' kills 103 Palestinians in 24 hours
Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip killed 103 Palestinians and wounded 427 others in 24 hours, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported on Friday, as the humanitarian crisis in the besieged territory deepens.
Emergency crews continue to face severe obstacles in reaching victims, with many bodies still trapped under rubble or lying in the streets, inaccessible due to ongoing bombardment and destroyed infrastructure.
The total death toll since the start of the Israeli assault on October 7, 2023, has now reached a staggering 55,207, with 127,821 people wounded, according to official figures.
Since March 18, 2025, 4,924 Palestinians have been killed and 15,780 others have been injured, marking an escalation in the intensity and scope of the attacks.
